hindu devotional story -guru purnima

The significance of Guru Poornima is the topic in this week’s Spot. “Guru Poornima is an important day for people on the spiritual path; it is on this day that a method evolved where human beings could aspire to become something other than what nature has determined. On this day Shiva, the Adi Yogi or the “first” yogi, also became the Adi Guru, and decided to impart his methods to the Saptarishis – the seven celestial sages.”
The Guru Poornima blow-out at iii went off in tremendous fashion Sunday. Apart from the 200 Anaadhi participants, another 200 meditators and visitors came for the celebration, with Sounds of Isha playing some great tunes that got us all dancing through the night under the coolness of the full moon.

Guru Poornima is an important day for people on the spiritual path; it is on this day that a method evolved where human beings could aspire to become something other than what nature has determined.  On this day Shiva, the Adi Yogi or the “first” yogi, also became the Adi Guru, and decided to impart his methods to the Saptarishis – the seven celestial sages. It took 84 years of hard-core sadhana for the Saptarishis to get Shiva’s attention, but after 84 years of intense preparatory work, Shiva found them to be true receptacles of knowing, so he transformed himself into a teacher.

We did not plan this, but somehow Sunday’s Guru Poornima also happened to be the 84th day of Anaadhi.  Probably never before, in this part of the world, have a group of people done the kind of sadhana that is happening here. I even tried to ignore them for the first few weeks while they underwent intense preparation. But these are determined people of all ages who want to master their own animal nature and become a different possibility than the past which rules them from within. And they are of all ages - one participant just had her 75th birthday and she did just as much as anybody else. I have to say they have done wonderfully well.

ADI GURU

Ascetics distance
The stoic stance
All this they bore
And He could not ignore

Seekers so intense
Broke his obstinate stance

Celestial sages seven
Strived not in search of Heaven

But to find a way for every human
To find a way beyond hell and heaven

They toiled for their race
He could not withhold his Grace

He turned his sacred face
To south to look upon their race

They not only beheld his divine face
But held the downpour of ultimate space

As the Beginningless One flowed
In knowing, seven sages overflowed

To release the world
From its crusted mold

To this day the sacred knowing flows
We will not rest until every vermin knows
Love and Blessings.

guru purnima importance hindu devotional story

The Importance of Guru Purnima: A Day to Earn Grace
What is the importance of Guru Purnima compared to the rest of the purnimas and other times of the year? Sadhguru outlines both the celestial alliances and the mystical significance of this time of receptivity and liberation, and he looks at how to make use of this time by becoming available to Grace.
Sadhguru: Of all the purnimas, why is this particular one dedicated to the guru? Fundamentally, in terms of receptivity, different points in the Earth’s orbit around the Sun tend to have certain qualities. There are certain days in the year when many sages and saints have found their moment of enlightenment. They did not get enlightened because of those days – they were in the process, they were close – but it easily blossoms on certain days because of a little assistance from nature.
On Guru Purnima, there is a certain alliance between the Moon and the planets, which creates a receptivity in people to that dimension which we refer to as the guru.

Traditionally, people made use of this time of receptivity in whatever best way they could. Usually in India, they would stay out in the moonlight, with the guru if it was possible. The whole night was spent either meditating or singing, dancing and going wild.
This is the time of the year when the Adiyogi’s attention fell upon his first seven disciples – the now celebrated Saptarishis. In the yogic tradition, Shiva is not worshipped as a God, but is considered the Adiyogi – the First Yogi, and as the Adi Guru, the First Guru from whom the yogic sciences originated.
So, this month is seen as the best time to receive the Grace of the Guru and make yourself receptive to the process.
So, we are in the month when an ascetic and yogi who was completely uninvolved with what was around him, was beginning to get involved. Slowly, the intention of sharing his experience was beginning to blossom in this month.

The Saptarishis had done some simple preparatory steps for eighty-four long years, without even a moment of attention from him. Then, during the shift of the sun from the northern to the southern run – which is called Dakshinayana in Indian culture – Adiyogi noticed that these seven people had become shining beings. After that, for twenty-eight days, he could not take his attention off them. His attention upon them was undivided.
Then, on the first full moon after the summer solstice, he decided to teach. He decided to become a Guru. This full moon is referred to as Guru Purnima. So this month is seen as a month where even a completely heartless ascetic could not ignore, and he became compassionate. Somebody who had hardened himself in such a way that the world could never touch him, he loosened up, became compassionate and was compelled to become a teacher or a Guru, for which he had no intention at all.

So, this month is seen as the best time to receive the Grace of the Guru and make yourself receptive to the process. This is a good time to earn that attention from the Grace.
“What should I do?” is always the question. If you do not do anything of your own, so that you are less of yourself, that is the best way to be receptive. Sadhana is always structured like this, so that it absorbs you into activity in such a way that in the daily process of living, you forget who you are, what you are and what your life is about. You are just absorbed into what is happening. That is the best way to receive Grace.
Then, on the first full moon after the summer solstice, he decided to teach. He decided to become a Guru. This full moon is referred to as Guru Purnima.
Do you know, you even breathe better when you are not aware of who you are and what you are? Do you see how smoothly people are breathing when they are asleep? If you watch their breath through the day, it is going through various kinds of turmoil. The more limited you make yourself, the more limited the breathing process becomes. How the breath happens when you sleep, that is how the breath should be happening all the time.

There is a beautiful expression in the Zen system of allowing human consciousness to grow. A disciple went to a Zen master and asked, “What should I do for my spiritual growth?” “Sweep the floor, chop the wood, cook the food, that is all.”
“For that, why should I come here? I can do it at home.” But there, sweeping is about your own floor. You will not sweep the next house’s floor if it is dirty. You will chop wood for your own use, you will cook food just for yourself and whom you consider as yours. You are using every activity to enhance who you are, not to dissolve who you are. This is all the difference between making our karma either into a bondage or into a process of liberation. Either you are acquiring karma or your karma is becoming yoga.
On Guru Purnima, there is a certain alliance between the Moon and the planets, which creates a receptivity in people to that dimension which we refer to as the guru.
So, just sweeping the floor, cooking the food, planting a mango tree – your enemy and his children may eat the mangoes, it is all right. We do not care who eats, just plant. Now, the activity is a process of dissolution. Otherwise, every activity is a way of imprisoning yourself. It is activity which is entangling people unfortunately. Human ability to do things is being used to imprison themselves. Human intelligence is being used to cause misery to oneself.

Once you start doing this, unknowingly, you will become an enemy of capability. That is a bad position to take. If you are against all capability and intelligence, you are asking for regression, not progress. You are not asking to evolve, you are asking to regress into a lesser kind of life.

The Importance of Guru Purnima for Your Growth
Today, it has become a fashion for people to say, “I want to be like a child.” Even the so-called spiritual leaders are saying, “I am like a child.” When you were a child, you desperately wanted to grow up quick, because all the capabilities that the adults had, made you look so small and useless. After you grew up, because you do not know how to manage this growing up, you want to become a child.

The less you do within yourself and the more you do outside of yourself, the more available you become to Grace.
Children are nice because things are going to change soon, so we value them the way they are now. But if you remain like that forever, that is not of any value.

Growing up is of value. To be capable of doing many things in your mind and your body is of value. Only if you do not know how to make use of your mind and body, and have made misery and entanglements out of them, then you will wish you had not grown up. Otherwise, to grow is something that everybody wants to do. Nobody wants to go backwards.

So, this month is the month of Grace. Grace is like manure for growth, that a human being can catapult himself to another dimension of existence, capability and possibility. So making use of Grace – what should we do? Nothing to do. The less you do within yourself and the more you do outside of yourself, the more available you become to Grace.

Guru Purnima: A Night of Liberation
For people who are on the spiritual path, Guru Purnima is the biggest day in the year because they want to receive the grace of the Adi Guru and every other guru on the way.

On that full moon night of Guru Purnima, 15000 years ago, as Adiyogi turned his attention to the seven sages, for the very first time in the history of humanity, human beings were reminded that they are not a fixed life. If they are willing to strive, every door in the existence is open. A human being need not be confined by the simple laws of nature.

For people who are on the spiritual path, Guru Purnima is the biggest day in the year because they want to receive the grace of the Adi Guru and every other guru on the way.
Confinement is one thing that a human being suffers most.  We have been teaching programs in prisons, both in India and a little bit in the United States, and in my experience, every time I entered the prison, there is pain in the air. It is something that I can never articulate. I am not a sappy, emotional kind but I have not gone into the prison even once without tears welling up because there is so much pain in the air. This is the pain of confinement. It is in knowing this and understanding this fundamental nature of a human being that the Adiyogi spoke about liberation.

This culture adopted liberation as the highest goal and the only goal. Everything that you do in your life is only towards your ultimate liberation because whatever the nature of confinement, whether the confinement is imposed by prison guards, marriage, school teachers or just the laws of nature -–  anything for that matter – confinement is one thing that a human being cannot take because his innate longing is for liberation.

On that full moon night of Guru Purnima, 15000 years ago, as Adiyogi turned his attention to the seven sages, for the very first time in the history of humanity, human beings were reminded that they are not a fixed life.
For the first time on this day, a few thousand years ago, Adiyogi gave ways as to how to transcend this confinement. I bow down to the Adiyogi for who he is, but my appreciation for the seven sages goes beyond my appreciation for the Adiyogi because they made themselves in such a way that he could not ignore them.

I do not think that any guru or yogi ever found another seven people with whom he could share anything he wanted, who were competent enough to grasp whatever was offered. Many yogis and gurus have found absolutely fabulous devotees with whom they have shared their grace and fulfilled them. But no one has found seven people with whom they could share their knowing. That has not happened…we are still striving.

GURU purnima story

The Story of Guru Purnima: From Adiyogi till Today
Guru Purnima has been celebrated and cherished for thousands of years in the Indian tradition. Sadhguru explores a few stories of Guru Purnima, from the first moment when the first Guru or Adi Guru began transmitting the science of yoga to the Saptarishis or seven sages, to Gautama the Buddha’s prescription to his monks, to the seasonal journeys of sadhakas during this time.
Sadhguru: We have entered the period of Dakshinayana, when the sun’s relationship with the planet changes from its northern movement to its southern run. The shift within the human body is such that during this time, it is more conducive for sadhana, for setting goals. It is the time when the farmer begins to plough the land. It is the time when the yogi begins to knead this piece of earth – the body – that he is privileged to carry. And it is at this time, many thousands of years ago, that the magnificent eyes of the Adiyogi fell upon the human creature.
The Story of the First Guru Purnima
In the yogic culture, Shiva is not seen as a god, he is seen as the Adiyogi, the first yogi. Over 15000 years ago, a yogi appeared in the upper regions of the Himalayas. No one knew where he came from and what his antecedents were – and he did not introduce himself – so they did not know his name. So he is referred to as Adiyogi or the first yogi.
Guru Purnima is that full moon day when the first yogi transformed himself into the Adi Guru – the first guru.
He simply came and sat and did nothing. The only sign of life was tears of ecstasy dribbling down his eyes. Except for that, it did not even seem like he was breathing. People saw that he was experiencing something that they were unable to fathom. They came, waited and left because the man was oblivious of other people’s presence.

Only seven people hung on. These seven people were insistent that they must learn from him. Adiyogi ignored them. They pleaded, “We want to know what you know.” He dismissed them, “You fools, the way you are, you are not going to know in a million years. You need to prepare. Tremendous amount of preparation is needed for this. This is not entertainment.”
The first full moon of Dakshinayana is Guru Purnima, the day the first guru was born.
But because they were so insistent, he gave them a few preparatory steps. So they started preparing – day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year – they prepared. Adiyogi just ignored them. It is said they did 84 years of sadhana. Then, one full moon day, after 84 years, on the day when the sun was shifting from the northern run to southern run – which in this tradition is known as Dakshinayana – Adiyogi looked at these seven people. They had become shining receptacles of knowing. They were absolutely ripe to receive. He could not ignore them anymore.

He observed them closely and, when the next full moon rose, he decided to become a guru. That full moon day is known as Guru Purnima. Guru Purnima is that full moon day when the first yogi transformed himself into the Adi Guru – the first guru. He turned south – which is why he is known as Dakshinamurthi – and the transmission of the yogic sciences to the seven disciples began. Thus, the first full moon of Dakshinayana is Guru Purnima, the day the first guru was born.

Guru Purnima: A Possibility to Transcend
This transmission – the world’s first yoga program – happened at the banks of the lake Kantisarovar, a few kilometers beyond Kedarnath. When we say “yoga,” we are not talking about twisting your body or holding your breath. We are talking about the very mechanics of life and how to take this piece of creation – you – to its ultimate possibility. This phenomenal dimension of human consciousness, or the possibility of the individual becoming a window to the universal, was unleashed on this day.
Guru Purnima signifies one of the greatest moments in the life of humanity. This is about transcendence and liberation, a possibility that human beings never knew.
Guru Purnima signifies one of the greatest moments in the life of humanity. This is about transcendence and liberation, a possibility that human beings never knew. It does not matter what your genetics are, who your father was, or what limitations you are born with or have acquired, you can transcend all of that, if you are willing to strive. For the first time in human history he declared that it is possible for a human being to evolve consciously.

A few years ago, when I was interviewed by an American magazine, one of the questions I was asked was, “Who is the most significant person in the West to have worked for human consciousness?” Without hesitation, I said, “Charles Darwin.” They said, “But Charles Darwin is a biologist.” I said yes, but he was the first to come and tell people that it is possible to evolve; it is possible to become something more than who you are right now.
Guru Purnima is about transcendence and liberation, a possibility that human beings never knew.
It is those societies in the West that subscribed to the theory of biological evolution that are open today to a spiritual process. Those that believe that God made us the way we are and that’s it – they are not open to any such possibility.

Darwin talked of biological evolution about two hundred years ago. Adiyogi talked of spiritual evolution more than fifteen thousand years ago. The essence of his teaching is that every atom in this existence – including the sun and the planet – has a consciousness of its own; but what these do not have is a discerning mind. Once consciousness arises with a discerning mind, it is the most powerful possibility. This is what makes human life so unique.

The Monsoon’s Role in the Story of Guru Purnima
After Adiyogi’s transmission was complete, the seven sages set forth to spread the yogic sciences throughout the world. One of them, Agastya Muni, headed south into the Indian subcontinent. Agastya Muni lived a life which could be considered almost superhuman, and he made sure that every human habitation south of the Himalayas had a spiritual process. In many ways, everything that we do here today, what we call Isha Yoga, is just a small extension of Agastya’s work.
Agastya’s move to the South began a tradition of yogis and spiritual sadhakas setting forth on a cycle of moving from the Himalayan region down south and back again up as the seasons come and go.
This tradition of traveling South and back again has been maintained as a yearly cycle since Agastya’s time.

Agastya’s move to the South began a tradition of yogis and spiritual sadhakas setting forth on a cycle of moving from the Himalayan region down south and back again up as the seasons come and go. This constant cycle has been maintained for thousands of years. During the summer, they are in the Himalayan caves, and in the winter they come down south. Many of them travel right up to Rameshwaram, which is the southern tip of the continent, and back north again, walking thousands of kilometers.

This tradition of traveling South and back again has been maintained as a yearly cycle since Agastya’s time. Today, the numbers have dwindled, but there was a time when yogis moved in hundreds and thousands. During that time, when they traveled in huge numbers, this month was a challenge because of the monsoons.

Why isn’t Guru Purnima a holiday? Why should Sunday be a holiday? What are you doing on a Sunday – eating potato chips and watching television.
We do not experience much of it now, but the monsoon has traditionally been a very furious process. The word itself, monsoon, has a certain speed and fury attached to it. When nature got so furious, traveling by foot became difficult. Generally it was decided that for this month, everyone would take shelter wherever they could.

Much later, Gautama the Buddha also prescribed rest for his monks for this one month, just to give them a break from the weather conditions when it would be very hard for people to travel. Because they were staying in one place, it was set up that this month should be spent in constant remembrance of the Guru.
The Story of Guru Purnima Predates Religion
For thousands of years, Guru Purnima was always recognized and celebrated as the day when new possibilities opened up for the human race. What Adiyogi offered predates all religion. Before people devised divisive ways of fracturing humanity to a point where it seems almost impossible to fix, the most powerful tools necessary to raise human consciousness were realized and propagated. Thousands of years ago, Adiyogi explored every possible way in which you could approach and transform the human mechanism into an ultimate possibility.
For thousands of years, Guru Purnima was always recognized and celebrated as the day when new possibilities opened up for the human race.
The sophistication of it is unbelievable. The question of whether people were so sophisticated at that time is irrelevant because this did not come from a certain civilization or thought process. This came from an inner realization. This had nothing to do with what was happening around him. It was just an outpouring of himself. In great detail, he gave a meaning and a possibility of what you could do with every point in the human mechanism.

You cannot change a single thing even today because he said everything that could be said in such beautiful and intelligent ways. You can only spend your lifetime trying to decipher it.
